Diabetic Diet - Half A Million American Diabetics Risk Critical Illness In A Bid To Be Thin

A frightening eating disorder is sweeping the diabetic population according to recent medical reports. Coined Diabulimia, this is a psychological condition affecting an estimated one third of diabetic women, including nearly half a million women in the US. These women, who need to take insulin regularly to survive, are skipping insulin injections in an attempt to lose weight.

Determining the exact number of women affected is tricky as most diabulimics are unlikely to admit to skipping insulin injections whilst they are actually in the habit of doing so, but it is clear that this is a growing phenomenon.

Many people believe word is spreading via internet message boards and chat rooms, where existing diabulimics are encouraging more and more women to lose weight by not taking their required insulin doses. Although the practise of losing weight by skipping insulin injections in not a new one, it seems to have grown out of control with the advent of the internet.

- So how does missing insulin shots result in weight loss?

Skipping insulin injections can cause diabetics to lose weight rapidly in a number of ways:

a. They are not getting any calories from the food they are consuming as there is no insulin to break down sugars and transport them to the bodys cells.
b. Very high blood sugar levels can cause muscle breakdown resulting in weight loss.
c. Excessive urinating caused by high blood sugar could result in dehydration which also leads to weight loss.

- The risks for diabulimics are extremely high

For a diabetic who is dependant on insulin shots, missing their medication can be extremely dangerous. The risks range from kidney and heart disease, to nerve damage resulting in blindness or amputations. Missing vital insulin injections can ultimately increase the risk of a coma and even death.

Matt Hunt, Science Information Manager from the research charity Diabetes UK made the following statement:

This eating disorder is extremely dangerous. Blood glucose that is too high for too long can cause serious complications, with diabetes being the leading cause of blindness amongst the working population in this country. Cardiovascular disease can also result from long periods of insulin abuse as well as kidney disease and nerve damage.

- Do you think someone you know may be diabulimic?

If someone you know is skipping insulin injections in order to lose weight you may notice the following symptoms.

1. They have low energy levels and excess fatigue
2. They are going to the toilet more frequently than usual
3. They are eating more than usual but still losing weight

Always encourage someone that you know is skipping insulin injections to get professional help. This is a psychological disorder, and although it may seem illogical to you to risk serious health issues just to be slim, it may not seem that way to the diabulimic.

- Balancing the fear of being fat against the fear of critical illness

Those suffering from Diabulimia are often aware of the potential damage they could do by skipping their insulin, but their worries about this are far outweighed by their fear of being fat. The weight loss that results from missing insulin shots is almost immediate and visible, the damage being done to the body is less obvious, occurs more gradually, and is easier to ignore.

Many people suffering from this disorder start small, perhaps missing just a couple of injections to fit into a particular dress for a big night out. Before they know it they may be missing most of their shots, taking just enough stay alive. They reason that they will begin to take their medication again once they are thin enough, but somehow, no matter how much weight they lose, they never believe they are thin enough.

Although gradual weight loss can be very positive for overweight diabetics, enabling them to control their blood sugar more effectively, missing insulin shots is never a good way to lose weight. Although diabulimia is not currently an officially recognized medical condition, it is as serious an eating disorder as anorexia or bulimia and it affects a frighteningly large number of diabetic women.

Tropical Hurricane Wilma

The National Weather Storm Center will be tracking Hurricane Wilma on their weather tropical storm tracker with satellite photos and full motion video. They will be using new tracking software and super computer weather monitoring systems looking for surface water temps, infrared, buoy readings and hurricane hunter information to track the eye wall wind speeds and category of winds. These technological advance prepare populations for potential powerful storms.

As a Tropical Storm and tropical depression Wilma, looked innocent enough. Indeed, no one was really worried, but now she has grown into a Hurricane and that means she is dangerous. How dangerous? Maybe not as bad as Hurricane Katrina or Rita, but bad enough to be paying attention to her potential.

Wilma is the last named storm of the Season before we start on the Greek Alphabet Letters, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc. This has been indeed, a record breaking Hurricane Season and it is not even over yet.

Florida has not had the devastation yet this 2005 Hurricane Season like it did in 2004, but that does not mean we are out of the woods by any means, as some of the most deadly Hurricanes in US History have come out of the East and made a direct beeline for the State of Florida. Wilma is a different lingering type of opportunist, but do not be so quick to count her out just yet. Think on this.

How To Embrace Emotional Goal Creation

Do our thoughts drive our emotions or vice-versa? What lessons can we learn about emotions and their impact on creating the goals we feel strongly connected to? While some emotions seemed to drain us of energy, others have the opposite effect. In this article we will look at how the practice of observing your emotions can lead you ever closer to what your goals are really intended to create.

It's probably self-evident to most people that feeling sad or down about the reality of your current life because it is in stark contrast to a future and unrealized potential, often makes you tired! So tired, that your very life energy can appear to be draining away. But it doesn't have to be that way. The very same energy you make use of to paint black the mental sky scape with clouds of gloom and resignation, can blow the storm away and reveal a brighter scene.

How is this done? The first step is to start becoming the dispassionate observer of your own emotional experience. Not to ignore or deny these emotions, mind you - because there is a part of you that is experiencing their effects in real-time, but to observe and yet feel them as we observe and feel the changing weather day by day.

In the context of setting life changing goals, this practice of observation can be unnerving at the best of times. There is sometimes a "knot" in your stomach or you may even feel a little sick at the thought of what lies between you and your goal. This is good! Embrace it, because the very fact that you can feel this way means the goal is a biggie. And this act of observing gives you an opportunity to send some of these mental clouds on their way with your very own jet stream of desire. It might take a little time. But the storm will pass.

Which leaves you where, exactly? In my experience, it can take you from being one of the "worried well" about setting your goals, to a state of almost driven calm. Easier to feel than to write about, but there for the asking. In fact, as you practice this observation of your emotional connection with your goals, you should expect there to be some anxiety, nervousness and doubts - sometimes almost as much as the positive emotions of courage, hope and desire. I guess underneath it all we're each just one big emotional weather machine!

And that brings me back to the opening paragraph of this article. What I do know is this. Thinking happy thoughts often just doesn't cut it on a permanent basis when I am, as the song goes, "feeling blue". Or when I am simply over anxious about where my goals might take me. God forbid! I might actually get closer to achieving some of them! Whereas, when my emotional barometer is "set fair", as a natural outcome of this habitual observing, it's very difficult for negative events, people or feelings to "bring me down" for long. So that's where I go now. How about you?

What Does This Weather Mean For Turning Out Your Pony?

Ok, so we all know it has been raining like crazy and half of England is under water. Down here in Cornwall we havent had the worst of it but it has rained a lot and we certainly havent had a summer yet. That said we had a great spell of weather back in April / May but that was a long time ago now. Ive just heard the weather forecast and theres more rain due today-great!!

The Launceston Show was on last weekend and we went down there for the morning- muddy, but not nearly as muddy as the Liskeard Show had been a couple of weeks before. I wrote a quick review of the Liskeard Show, specifically the Mountain & Moorland Classes, so its out there if you are interested.

Unfortunately the afternoon of the Launceston Show bought torrential rain so the show was closed. Luckily for us most of the Pony Showing Classes had gone on in the morning so for those Showing in the morning the day hadnt been a disaster. We watched the Lead Rein Mountain and Moorland, and then First Ridden Classes which were very well attended. The site turned into a mud bath but as at Liskeard the local farmers did a fantastic job towing vehicles out of the mud so everybody got out eventually.

For those that have not read any of our stuff before we have a Cleveland Bay mare, a Welsh Section B and a Shetland Pony. Fortunately for them we have a business supplying tack and essentials for Shetlands and most of the Native Pony Breeds so our three are not short on turnout rugs and such to keep them dry in this weather.

Our three are all in at the moment for different reasons, but in the case of the ponies it is mostly because the grass is continually growing that there is an increased risk of laminitis this summer. Our Shetland Pony, Poppy, started to look a bit sore when ridden on the road and we found a pulse at the fetlock which indicates increased blood flow to the foot. We felt it might be the start of something so we brought her in where she has been for a week now. Our Welsh, Gulliver, has also been put on restricted grazing just to be on the safe side. Lots of extra work but better safe than sorry.

In the stables we are using a Mini Miser Haynet and a Wee Pony Haynet. Basically these have holes that are half the size of the holes in normal Haynets so are perfect for hungry ponies that have a tendency to eat too much. We sell these on our website along with things like the Greenguard Pony Grazing Mask, again a product to restrict the grazing but not completely cancel turnout time. If you want to know more about products for restricting pony grazing please email us or visit the website.

There seems to be the feeling that once the sun comes out here the grass will really grow because we have had so much rain and then owners will need to be very careful that their ponies are not getting too much grass. If you have any concerns we would strongly advise consulting a vet.

Please look out for my piece on buying second hand horse and pony trailers so if you are trying to get one in the second hand market you can benefit from the hard lessons we have learned.
