Yoga: Opening the Hips with the Pigeon Pose

A common request in any yoga class is for hip openers like the Pigeon pose. Although hip openers can be challenging, they are popular because they can also be very satisfying, both physically and emotionally.

Our hips tend to be extremely tight. Most people spend much of their day sitting which renders their hips joints immobile and reduces their agility. Also, everyday activities like walking and common sports such as cycling and running involve hip strength but not hip flexibility. Most of us lead very busy lives and this leads to stress. This stress in turn creates tension in our bodies and often results in further locking up our already tight hip sockets.

Incorporating Pigeon pose into your daily routine will help you to unlock your hips, move with greater ease and relieve a considerable amount of tension.

This pose stretches the hip flexors and the hip rotators, providing a terrific solution to problems arising from hip tightness. Since it also requires internal rotation in the back leg and external rotation in the front leg, it will have a positive effect on your whole body, perhaps even allowing you to move more freely after consistent practice.

The Pigeon pose isolates various muscles in the hips, reducing stiffness and increasing flexibility. It is this isolation of muscles that can make this pose so challenging. Be aware that there is definitely some physical work involved with the practice of this asana. The key is to bring your attention to and observe the sensations created in your body during your practice.

On your mat, go on all fours with your knees below your hips and your hands underneath your shoulders. Bring the right knee forward until it touches the right wrist while maintaining a straight line between the right thigh and the sides of the mat. Slowly move your right foot and shin toward the middle of your body until your foot is directly below your left hip. Straighten the left leg toward the back of the mat.

Don't lean forward but walk your hands back and lower both sides of the pelvis toward the mat. Keeps your hips straight and level as the pelvis releases. You can use a block or a folded blanket if you have trouble lowering the hips evenly.

Press the fingertips firmly into your mat and lengthen the sides of your waist as your hips continue to settle. This will help keep your lower back long and free from strain.

Inhale deeply and walk the hands forward as you lengthen in the midsection. Exhale as you fold forward and lower the elbows to the floor. The weight that is released in the hips can be adjusted by using the arms. Using the arms to support the body can ease any discomfort felt in the hips.

Pay attention to the sensations in your hips and buttock. If it feels extremely uncomfortable, a shift in alignment may be required. Remember, the idea is to relieve tension, not to create additional tension in your joints.

Keeping the hips level is vital in the practice of the Pigeon pose. If the hips are uneven, an imbalance will result when you fold forward. To offset this, a folded blanket may be placed under the right buttock (if you are extending the right knee).

Keep the thigh of your front leg lined up parallel to the sides of the mat. Your front foot should be directly beneath your back hip. Bring your breath into your hips and observe the sensations running through them. Relax the muscles in your face and let go of thoughts appearing in your mind. Allow your body to melt to the floor as you continue to breathe into your hips.

Stay in the forward fold for 5 - 10 breaths. Then inhale and come back up. Lift your hips away from the floor as you press into your fingertips. Transition to downward dog and take 5 deep breaths, observing how you feel in your hips. Then switch to the other side.

New Cabbage Soup Diet

The new cabbage soup diet is basically the same as the old cabbage soup diet that has been around for years. There are a few twists to the new version that make it a little different, but it is still a very low calorie diet that consists of eating a lot of cabbage. The cabbage soup diet cuts calories by drastic amounts, thus the weight loss is also dramatic. The great results are short lived because no one can sustain this diet indefinitely.

There is not a claim as to who first started this diet. The idea is to eat as much cabbage soup as you want. You are to eat enough to ensure that you do not ever feel full. The foods that you are allowed to eat are broken down so that only a couple of things are allowed each day. Of course, you eat the soup everyday.

Day 1 -Fruit as you like, no bananas

Day 2 - Vegetables

Day 3 - Fruit and vegetables no potatoes and bananas

Day 4 - Bananas and skimmed milk

Day 5 - Beef and tomatoes

Day 6 - Beef and vegetables no potatoes

Day 7 - Brown rice, vegetables no potatoes

Recipes for the cabbage soup vary, but all are based on cabbage, onions, tinned tomatoes, Bell peppers, celery, carrots and onion soup mix.

The cabbage soup diet does work, but the results are very short term. the weight is regained as quickly as it came off. This diet is often used by people who need a quick fix for some upcoming event. The diet is pretty simple and easy to keep up with, but it requires a lot of shopping and cooking. The soup stores well for a few days at a time in the refrigerator.

Premiership Transfer Window Review - Part Two

david Walker continues his review of the January transfer window and how the moves will impact each teams success, or survival at the end of the 2005/06 season.

Everton
After spending the early part of the season facing a relegation battle the only reinforcements came in the form of Alan Stubbs, joining from Sunderland for his second spell at the club.

Two players have left the club Marcus Bent to Charlton and Per Kroldrup to Fiorentina. The Danish defender arrived in a 5 million switch from Udinese but returned to Italy for substantially less after making just one league appearance.

At 10 points clear, Everton look safe from the drop but you may be tempted by the 33/1 relegation odds.

Fulham
Fulham are battling against relegation and have made five new signings. Goalkeepers Tony Warner and Antti Niemi joined from Cardiff and Southampton respectively while New Zealand international Simon Elliott arrived from Columbus Crew. Defender Wayne Bridge and midfielder michael Brown joined from Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on loan.

Without an away win all season, Fulhams strength and key to survival lies in their form at Craven Cottage. 26 of the 29 points accumulated have come from home wins and manager Chris Coleman will need to keep up this momentum. Fulham can be backed at 14/1 for relegation.

Liverpool
Third in the table and a favourable draw in the Champions League has seen further recruits arrive at Anfield. Defender Jan Kromkamp arrived in a swap deal from Villarreal which saw Josemi return to Spain while Danish defender Daniel Agger cost 5.8 million from Brondby.

A host of fringe players left on loan deals but all transfers were eclipsed by the return of striker Robbie Fowler, five years after leaving Anfield. Fowler scored 120 goals in 236 premiership matches for the Reds previously and with Manchester united wobbling, Liverpool could eclipse them in second position. They are three points behind in third but have two games in hand. Rafa Benitezs side can be backed at 6/5 to win the premiership in the without Chelsea market.

Manchester City
Following a blistering start to the season, City are sitting comfortably in tenth position. manager Stuart Pearce will not stand for half measures and has motivated his side into three wins out of their last four matches, including a 3-1 derby win over bitter rivals united.

Pearce has boosted the ranks with the 6 million signing of Greek striker Georgios Samaras from Heerenveen after allowing Robbie Fowler to rejoin Liverpool and the loan capture of Espanyol midfielder Alberto Riera. Pearces managerial qualities have not gone unnoticed and he is quoted at 20/1 to succeed Sven Goran Eriksson as the next england boss.

Manchester united
The former premiership powerhouses have been exposed yet again this season as being nowhere near Chelsea in terms of results, consistency and strength in depth. However, the Glaziers sanctioned the arrivals of Spartak Moscow defender Nemanja Vidic Spartak for 7 million and 5.5 million signing Patrice Evra.

A dire spell in europe has seen them with the Carling Cup one of their only chances of silverware this season although Sir Alex Fergusons side are still 5/6 favourites for the premiership without Chelsea. Strike duo Ruud van Nistelrooy is 5/6 and Wayne Rooney 10/1 to top the premiership scoring charts.

Middlesbrough
One of the pre season outsiders for a top four position, Middlesbrough are now staring relegation square in the face. Boro have won just once in their last 10 premiership outings and that was away at rock bottom Sunderland.

No players arrived in January although Szilard Nemeth left for Strasbourg. One of the few bright spots, striker Yakubu, can be backed at 16/1 to top the premiership goalscoring chart while speculative punters may fancy the 13/2 on offer of relegation.

Newcastle united
manager Graham Souness became the latest premiership managerial casualty after recently losing five of their last six league matches. With just 36 wins in his 83 matches in charge the club are hovering six points above the drop zone.

big money arrivals michael Owen and Alberto Luque failied to ignite an expected charge for European football and former West Ham manager Glenn Roeder and Alan Shearer have taken over the reigns temporarily. Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is the 9/2 favourite to take over permanently and despite a poor run of form the Magpies remain 20/1 outsiders for relegation.

The third and final part of the review will look at transfers involving Portsmouth, Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham united and Wigan Athletic.

Diets Make You Fat!

The reason I say that is because ALL DIETS deal with the consequence (BEING FAT!) and not the CAUSE (the reason why you got fat in the FIRST PLACE).

Now, dont get me wrong I am by no means advocating that you dont eat right. This is not what I am saying at all.

I searched the internet to define DIETS and this is what I found.

diet: the act of restricting your food intake (or your intake of particular foods) wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Dieting is the practice or habit of eating (and drinking) in a regulated fashion, usually with the aim of losing weight. It is also used in some cases to gain weight or to regulate the amounts of certain nutrients entering the body. It usually involves a non-traditional diet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieting

Regulating or restricting ones food intake! How bazaar is that! All that does is it teaches the body to store FAT, because the body thinks its going to starve and doesnt know where the next meal will come from. So the body will instinctively start to take the fat from all the food you put into your mouth to gratify its needand then it starts to store the fat for when it may need it again.

Did you know (and you probably already do by your own experience) that if you deprive your body of what it wants it automatically starts to CRAVE it, when the body craves for it you have an overwhelming desire to eat itand lots of it. And this is the reason why it is hard for people to stay on diets.

Feed the body what it wants; when it wants it (within reason of cause) and the body will no longer store the fat.

I teach people 4 simple steps that help them lose weight and keep it off by using Emotional Freedom Technique. Because it will work where nothing else will, usually rapid, long lasting and gentle, no drugs or equipment involved, easily learned by anyone and can be self applied. My many workshop participants will testify to this.

It is all about the CAUSE, the reason why you got fat in the first place. There are a number of reasons why people OVER-EAT, but in saying that all the possible reasons are emotionally based. Emotional Freedom Technique will fix it and will then help you lose weight.

Water Help To Lose Weight - Three Proven Methods That Can Help You Lose Weight

Does taking in large amounts of water help to loss weight? Losing weight is not rocket science. It's simply a matter of taking in less calories each day than you're using, or burning more calories than you're using. This means that if during the course of your regular daily activities you are burning 3,000 calories, then you'll want to eat foods that add up to less than that amount.

For example, if it's determined that a person of your size uses that amount of calories each day, then putting yourself on a diet that only allowed you 2,000 calories per day would put you on course to lose two pounds per week. How, you ask? Because it takes 3,500 calories to either gain or lose one pound of fat. By reducing you caloric intake by 1,000 calories daily for seven days you'll have lost 7,000 calories from your body, or 3,500 x 2 = two pounds.

Drinking plenty of water is an essential part of your daily routine. It helps to flush your system and is better for you than any other liquid beverage on the planet for maintaining good health. Drinking a big glass of water before you eat a meal is not a bad idea. Keep in mind though that even if you're dieting you'll still need to get the proper nutrients in your body, so don't substitute water for too many meals.

You could fast one day per week and drink nothing but water. This will not only help you to lose weight but you'll also help to flush your system out. Everyone, dieting or not, should fast from time to time.

Summary - If you're wondering if water will help you to loss weight, yes it can, but don't abuse it. Cut your calories, drink water and begin an exercise program. Doing these three things can rapidly speed up your weight loss and you'll be doing it the healthy way.

Tips for Improving Your Golf Driver Play

practice these Golf driving tips and instructions at practice ranges. These instructions will help you to get longer yard range at the tee.

Almost every golfer is trying to get more distance off the tee. Always remember that the driver is the most difficult club in the bag to hit, due to the amount of loft being the least. Hence, for even a small miss, the error is going to be larger than with a nine iron.

Imagine yourself on the tee box of your favorite shot 4 par. You have your driver club in hand. The hole is designed with risk reward. If you hit the ball long and straight, you can get very near or maybe on the green and can setup a birdie. But if you miss-hit, you stare down at the barrels. You may get o/b or balloon score.

distance is determined by the clubhead speed. The faster you swing the club, the farther the ball will travel. Driving the golf ball long and straight is the holy grail of almost all amateur golfers. An average player generally uses his arms to move the club faster, and this leads him to problems and inconsistency. Instead, he must try to make a solid contact. It is better to hit the ball in the center of the clubhead speed of 90 miles an hour than to hit the ball on the toe of the clubhead at 100 miles an hour.

It is important to focus on swinging in tempo, with a smooth move. Make a full shoulder turn away from the ball and think about turning your back to the target. Make a full rotation while swinging through and face the target. Above all it is important to stay in balance.

Incorporating these tips will take lots of practice, but as long as you keep working on the fundamentals.

  • Watch and imitate good players. Imitation is one of the best methods of learning.
  • Never watch players who are struggling, unless you want to imitate their swings.
  • practice.
  • practice wherever possible - on the driving range, in your living room, or even your backyard. You dont have to leave your home to get quality practice.
  • complete concentration must be on your practice. Its much better to spend ten minutes and concentrate on what youre doing than spend an hour just whacking balls.
  • If youre hitting a too may balls, take breaks at regular intervals.
  • Think about what youre doing, and rest when youre tired and frustrated.
  • Dont wear sun glasses they impair your depth perception.
  • It is extremely rude to give unsolicited advice to your friends or strangers, even if you believe that your advice will help them
  • Walk the course. Professional golfers always walk. The reason being that, walking gives you more time to concentrate on your next shot. And it actually improves the speed with which you play.
  • Have a professional videotape your swing, then watch it, and analyze it.
